Overview: Power Monitoring & Metering Upgrade
Children’s Wisconsin, a leading pediatric hospital in Milwaukee, partnered with FTI to enhance the reliability and performance of its power infrastructure through a multi-phase power monitoring and metering upgrade utilizing Power Monitoring Expert (PME) software developed by Schneider Electric®.
A long-standing partner of the hospital for more 25 years, FTI implemented customized solutions across 19 substations between November 2023 and February 2024. This upgrade was designed to deliver greater visibility, efficiency and safety while maintaining uninterrupted care in a fully operational healthcare environment.
Challenges: Live Hospital Environment & Cybersecurity Demands
Executing complex electrical upgrades in a live hospital setting required extreme precision and planning. FTI was tasked with integrating new PME systems without disrupting patient care, all while navigating strict IT cybersecurity standards, coordinating large-scale shutdowns and resolving unexpected infrastructure issues. Leadership changes during the project also required ongoing communication and a consistent demonstration of value to maintain alignment and trust.
Solutions: Customized PME Integration & Risk Mitigation
FTI applied its end-to-end approach to drive success from preconstruction through completion. The team worked closely with hospital stakeholders to develop department-specific risk mitigation and shutdown plans, optimize load sequencing (reducing demand spikes by 130%) and implement PME technology for real-time power monitoring. FTI also addressed substation damage, corrected breaker positioning and resolved incomplete factory setups, ensuring long-term reliability. By proactively managing every phase, FTI delivered a resilient, future-ready power system while reinforcing a trusted partnership that continues to grow.
