Q: What is an ICIAN?
A: An ICIAN is a master technician in their specific industry, such as data centers, industrial plants or renewable energy, with experience in all phases of the electrical infrastructure lifespan. While each ICIAN has their own unique skillset, they all share the quality of being an efficient problem solver. Individually, they may not be experts in every single aspect of our trade, but each ICIAN knows how and where to find solutions for any problem encountered. Collectively, ICIAN’s provide our customers with a trusted technician for all aspects of their electrical needs.
Q: What makes an ICIAN unique?
A: ICIANs typically have electrical and systems experience, making them versatile in handling a variety of technical issues. Their skill set may include working with EV chargers, commissioning and startup services, programmable logic controllers, smart breakers, connected power systems, fiber optics and other communication systems.
Q: What do you do as an ICIAN?
A: Currently, I’m involved with FTI’s eMobility team for EV Charger installations. I assist with our projects throughout the design and installation process. Prior to this, I was involved with data center work.
Q: How does someone become an ICIAN?
A: Currently, apprentices would participate in the initial five-week core training. After they complete the core, they have the option to participate in our mastery training, which currently consists of Quality Assurance/Quality Control, Commissioning, Lockout/Tagout, Energy, Field Services and Data Centers. Individuals are eligible for the program in their fourth year of the electrical apprenticeship after they have completed 6,000 hours of field experience or in their third year of specialty systems apprenticeship with a minimum of 5,000 hours experience.
Q: What skills and characteristics are important for an ICIAN?
A: Attention to detail, a good work ethic, adaptability and a willingness to learn are all important to have as an ICIAN. Essential technical skills include a background in electrical or systems work, with a mix of both being ideal.
Q: What challenges do ICIANs face in the industry?
A: The industry is constantly evolving, with new technologies and products emerging. This presents a challenge for ICIANs to stay updated. Active learning and adaptation are necessary to keep up with advancements in the industry.
Q: What advice do you have for aspiring ICIANs?
A: Aspiring ICIANs should go for it! Learn new skills and be adaptable. It’s important to seek out what’s next and constantly improve your skillset, as the job can vary from project to project. Having an open mind is crucial.
