At FTI, safety is part of everything we do. For Christina Mitchell, a senior onsite safety manager on one of our large-scale strategic projects, that belief drives every decision she makes. Known onsite as a trusted mentor and even “jobsite mom,” Christina brings nearly 20 years of experience, a background in the military and a true heart for people to her work.

We sat down with Christina to learn what fuels her passion for safety, what a typical day looks like and what advice she’d give others considering a career in this critical field.

“The best part of my job is the people,” she says. “When someone calls me their favorite safety manager, that’s the highest compliment I can get.”

What inspired you to pursue a career in safety?

Honestly, I didn’t seek it out. It found me. I was working in general industry at the time, and the company I was with needed a safety representative for our team. My manager said, “You’d be perfect for this,” and that was the beginning. As soon as I stepped into the role, I realized I’d found my niche.

Caring for people has always been a part of who I am. I served in the military and wanted to be a medic. Later, I went to school to be a radiologist. So even though I didn’t plan on being in safety, it makes perfect sense now. I genuinely care about people’s well-being, and this role allows me to make a real difference.

To support that mission, I’ve completed several industry certifications over the years. I hold my OSHA 500 and Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), which is nationally recognized by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. I’ve also taken part in specialized training courses through OSHA outreach programs and other accredited centers. Staying current on certifications is part of how I continue to grow and make sure I’m bringing the best support I can to our teams in the field.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Most mornings start before sunrise, usually around 5:00 a.m. I attend the daily “bend and stretch” meetings with our crews, help review job hazard analyses, answer questions and make sure everyone has what they need to work safely. After that, my day can include anything from attending site coordination meetings to walking the jobsite to connect with team members.

I try to spend as much time in the field as I can. It’s important to me that people know I’m available – not just as a safety manager, but as someone they can talk to. Whether someone has a safety concern or just needs to vent about a tough day, I want them to feel supported.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

For me, it’s relationships. Over time, I’ve earned the trust of our crews and leaders, and that doesn’t happen overnight. I remember when I first started at FTI, a few superintendents were skeptical. I had to prove myself. But once they saw I was consistent, honest and there for the right reasons, that respect came naturally.

Today, I’m often referred to as “Mom” onsite, and I’ve even been called an honorary grandma. That kind of connection is what makes this role so fulfilling.

What advice would you give to someone considering a safety career?

Get to know your people. That’s the most important thing. It’s not just about policies, it’s about building trust. When your team knows you’re on their side, they’re more likely to speak up, ask questions and buy into the safety culture. And if you don’t know something, say so. Write it down, find the answer and always follow up. That kind of follow-through builds credibility fast.

For women thinking about entering this field: don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it. Have confidence, stand tall and find a support system because you absolutely can. Construction safety is challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.

From walking the jobsite to supporting team members through challenges big and small, Christina leads with care and purpose. Her story is just one example of how FTI’s safety leaders are shaping a culture of protection, trust and respect across all our projects.

Safety is a core value at FTI, and we’re proud to have passionate leaders like Christina guiding the way; one conversation, connection and safe step at a time.
